The Parenting Simply Back to Basics course on a laptop, with the companion workbook and a tablet

You're pulling every "mom hack" in the book. So why do you still feel like you're failing as a parent?

  • It's 7:52am. You've asked about shoes four times. And all of a sudden nobody can find their shoes.

  • You're at the door. Coat on. Keys in hand. And your daughter is face-down on the floor because you cut the sandwich into squares instead of triangles.

  • Bedtime is now a hostage negotiation and you are not winning. One more drink. One more question. One more trip out of bed.

  • Every time you say no, you find yourself defending your position like it's a Supreme Court case.

  • And then there's the 10pm replay. Lying there running the tape of how you talked to them today, promising tomorrow's gonna be different.

So even though you are smart, talented & you love your kids more than anything in this world, this parenting thing makes you want to pull your hair out.

None of this means you're a bad mom or you have bad kids, it just means that you were never taught how to parent in a way that allows you to show up gently while still holding the line.

There's a version of you that handles the chaotic moments with (relative) ease.

7:52am stops being a battle.

You know how to set the morning up the night before, so shoes aren't a surprise and you're not the one making it happen at volume.

You see the meltdown coming.

Most tantrums have a runway. You learn to spot it and step in before your daughter is face-down on the floor over a sandwich.

Bedtime goes smoothly

You know exactly how to handle when your kid is thirsty, as soon as they lay down.

Avoid the power struggle

The way you phrase your requests, so kids are guided to do what you ask, without seeing it as a command.

Parenting Simply is a must read for parents. I am a retired elementary school teacher and principal. I have used many of the techniques described in this book and they work. The information found in this book will be useful for all families no matter what their background is.

I enjoyed all of this seminar. I especially enjoyed the specific examples of verbage that can be used to show empathy and how to deliver specific praise. This was the most thorough, enlightening and practical workshop I've taken on behavior management. I really thoroughly enjoyed it.
CharlotteSpeech-Language Pathologist
Specific types of responses to defiant behaviors. The videos supported the content well and I would love to access those for parent/teacher training. This session was well-organized and structured to make it easy to follow. I will use many of the resources in my practice. Thank you.
TinaSpeech-Language Pathologist
Clarification of what often might be clumped into "bad behavior." Liked the differentiation and gradiation of behaviors, as well as corresponding techniques to address each level. TONS of examples - very useful for therapists, classroom teachers/staff, and parents! This course would be great to offer to school psychologists or school social workers - or even principals or others in charge of out of control children. The content offered practical advice rather than theoretical concepts.
ShirleySpeech-Language Pathologist
Great ideas for dealing more effectively with misbehavior. All of the wonderful examples. I liked the organization and the videos to back up the information presented. I found this to be very thorough. I think it was organized and executed very well the way it was taught.

Hi Im Adina Soclof

I'm a speech pathologist and parent educator, and I've spent more than twenty years working with children and the people raising them.

I started this work because parenting is hard. So hard that I once lost my temper and found myself raising my voice at my oldest, and instead of him nodding along, understanding what he'd done wrong, I looked over and he was cowering in the corner. Making himself small. Waiting for it to be over.

And I had a master's degree in communication. I spent my days teaching other people's children how to express themselves, and I had no idea what to say to my own.

So I asked myself a different question. Instead of trying to be calmer in the moment, what if I prepared something before the moment? Something I could reach for, so I wasn't relying on instinct?

What I learned eventually became the Parenting Simply system, which I've now helped thousands of parents implement. It's the seven skills that equip parents before the tantrum.

Today I trained the professionals. Speech pathologists, occupational therapists, teachers, and mental health clinicians take my courses for continuing education credit. I wrote Parenting Simply: Preparing Kids for Life, I host the podcast Simply Jewish Parenting, and I've taught thousands of mothers the same seven things, because the skills that work with the hardest kids in a school building are the ones that work at your dinner table.

Frequently Asked Questions

My kid has special needs. Will this work?

Yes. I've spent twenty years as a speech pathologist working with children who have significant challenges, and these are the same skills I use with them. They're effective communication skills — how to prepare a child for what's coming, how to phrase a request so it doesn't trigger a fight, how to praise in a way that actually builds something. If anything, kids who struggle need the preparation and rehearsal pieces more, not less.

What ages is this for?

Roughly two through eighteen. The system doesn't change with age — what changes is what you're rehearsing. With a four-year-old you're practicing how to accept "no." With a fourteen-year-old you're practicing how to leave a party they don't want to be at. Same seven skills, different scripts, and I cover both.

How is this different from other parenting classes?

Fair question, and I'd ask it too. Most parenting advice gives you a philosophy and leaves you to figure out the words. This gives you the words — actual phrases you can say tonight — plus a workbook where you write your own, so they're in your voice and not mine. And it starts by explaining why your kids do what they do, because the skills don't work while you're still taking it personally.

What should I do if I don't have time to sit through a course?

It's about three hours total, broken into pieces you can watch on your phone. Most mothers do it over a week or two, in the gaps. And you don't have to finish it to use it — the go-to phrases work the day you learn them.

Honestly, most of the time things are fine. It's just one issue.

Then start there. Pick that one thing, and Module 5 walks you through applying all seven skills to a single challenge start to finish. That's the whole design — you're not overhauling your family, you're fixing the thing that's actually bothering you.

Won't they just grow out of it?

Some of it, yes — and I'll be the first to tell you which behaviors are completely normal and require nothing from you but patience. That's Module 3, and for a lot of mothers it's the most relieving part of the course. But the skills aren't really about eliminating behaviors. They're about what your child learns from how you handle them, and that part doesn't happen on its own.

A mom and her daughter fist-bumping in the kitchen

Being a mom is the most rewarding thing you'll ever do. But it's also the hardest.

Here's the truth: I can't make it easy. But I can give you the mindset, the strategies, and everything I've learned in twenty years of doing this, so you show up prepared instead of winging it.
